The last 7 years are characterized by the successful development of greenhouse vegetable production in Russia. New high-tech greenhouses have already solved the problem of providing the population with fresh cucumbers at any time of the year, and today domestic producers are quickly approaching the goal of replacing imported tomatoes, green and leafy salads from our stores.

Far Eastern regions still remain almost "untouched virgin land" by the greenhouse industry. The main part of the consumer basket of the Far East residents is still represented by imported fresh vegetables of all kinds. In contrast to constituent entities of the European part of Russia, and even Siberia, regular deliveries from traditional Russian vegetable growing areas to the Far Eastern Federal District are very difficult and very expensive for the end buyer. China is the main supplier of fresh vegetables to the region, although the quality and safety of its products raise reasonable doubts among consumers.

Only a large-scale construction of new modern greenhouses can solve the long-standing problems of fresh vegetables supply to the Far East.

"Growth Technology" Company conducted a research of fresh vegetable local markets in each of the 11 Far Eastern District's regions. The parameters under investigation included local production, its seasonality and assortment of grown products; technological equipment, gross yield and plans of working commodity producers of vegetables; import and interregional supply of vegetables; consumption volume and structure of consumer basket; prices and deficit of trade supply in each region and republic of FEFD. Estimated indicators of the capacity and potential of local markets for the construction of new industrial greenhouses are given, taking into account the declared projects. Analysed the areas by types of crops necessary to solve the problem of absolute dependence of the district and all its constituent regions on external supplies are indicated.

The research "Greenhouse vegetable growing in the Far East-2021. Availability of fresh vegetables. Potential and prospects of the industry by the subjects of the Far Eastern Federal District by 2024" will be useful for:

  • investors to assess the prospects for building vegetable greenhouses in each FEFD region in 2021 - 2023,
  • operating greenhouse complexes to choose a competitive strategy,
  • to local authorities in order to identify measures to support greenhouse projects.

Aims and objectives of the research

  • To evaluate the current state, specific features and prospects of greenhouse business development in the Far Eastern Federal District of the Russian Federation in general and by separate subjects (regions, republics and krais) in particular,
  • Identify the main problems of the industry protected ground and the poor availability of fresh vegetables,
  • To calculate the balances of greenhouse fresh vegetables markets by subjects of the Russian Far Eastern Federal District: to compare the local production of fresh vegetables in open and protected ground; commercial and private production by the population; assortment matrix of production, foreign and interregional import and export,
  • Evaluate the saturation of local markets with fresh vegetables and the provision of the population (average per capita indicators) by regions of the Far Eastern Federal District,
  • Provide information on new industrial greenhouse projects in each FEFD region and their prospects;
  • To calculate the deficit/surplus of local production of major protected vegetable crops by separate subjects of the Far Eastern Federal District of the Russian Federation,
  • To estimate the potential of building new modern greenhouses for internal provision of subjects, taking into account plans of working enterprises and the declared projects for 2021 - 2023.

Research period

  • Retrospective analysis for 2017 - 2020,
  • Forecasts and estimates for 2021 - 2023.

Sources of information and research methods

  • Open and conditionally open sources: Rosstat, Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Agriculture, administrative resources of the regions, industry ministries, data of enterprises and holdings, business, public and industry media,
  • Growth Technology's own data and developments in the greenhouse industry, the results of previous initiative and field research conducted in 2017 - 2020 in certain regions of Russia, surveys of the management of operating enterprises and project initiators,
  • Comparative analysis, calculations, estimates, forecasts and modeling of local greenhouse markets in the Far East by the Contractor's own methods.

The finished report on the results of the research is ready for March 2021. It consists of 196 Arial 11 pages, including 110 diagrams, 23 tables and 13 appendices. A demo version of the report you can find here.
